Abstract

There is need for oil companies to manage the impact of its operations as part of its corporate social responsibility. The success of the Escravos-Gas-to-Liquid (EGTL) project will be measured against its ability to bring about social benefits from its operation with minimal impact to the stakeholders and particularly, the environment. To advance sustainable development, it is best to fully appreciate the issues and impacts that can arise from the EGTL project. This dissertation presents the social and environmental issues and potential impact in the exploration of Gas-to-Liquid (GTL). It considers a wide range of issues that might be encountered in oil and gas cycle. It is anticipated that these in turn can facilitate in developing a management framework to help with social planning issues that could be targeted at: - Project Managers: to help them identify issues that may be important in their leadership role - Business and project teams, to help them identify issues that may be of importance in project development and management. The research questions cover the social and environmental impact of gas exploration using the Chevron EGTL project. It takes a look at various social and environmental issues from project phase through operation. The dissertation identifies both the potential positive and negative impact of the project, proposing a management framework that can bring about means of addressing the issues and impacts to the mutual benefit of the company and all other stakeholders.
