Abstract
Physical activity and some lipoproteien parameters amongst men with an
increased concentration of total cholesterol.
There is epidemiological and experimental evidence suggesting that physical
activity may reduce the mortality rate from coronary heart disease (CHD). A
high level of cardiorespiratory fitness can be associated with favourable blood
pressure, blood lipid and lipoproteien levels, as well as body measurements.
The mechanisms associated with the effect of physical activity on CHD
mortality levels are still uncertain. A possible explanation is the effect of
physical activity on HDL-cholesterol levels. Research has shown a certain
amount of interdependency between HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol
concentrations as well as an increase of HDL-cholesterol concentrations with an
increase in physical activity levels.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of physical activity on
some lipoproteien levels amongst men with an increased total cholesterol
concentration. The independent effects of smoking and obesity, which are
normally assosiated with coronary heart disease, was also investigated.
Participation in physical activity showed statistically significant (p~0.05)
relations with HDL-cholesterol, LDL/HDL-ratio as well as the TC/HDL-ratio. Highly
physically active individuals showed a practically significantly (ES~0.5) higher
HDL-cholesterol concentration as well as a lower LDL/HDL-ratio and TC/HDL-ratio than
physically inactive respondents.
Regarding the effect of the covariables (smoking and obesity) on the relationship
between the PAI and the dependent variables it was found that physically active
smokers and obese respondents had more favourable LDL/HDL-ratio, TC/HDLratio
and HDL-C values than inactive smokers and obese respondents. The
physically active smokers and obese respondents also showed similar or more
favourable values (HDL-C, LDL/HDL-ratio and TC/HDL-ratio) than inactive
non-smokers and non-obese respondents. Two conclusions can thus be drawn
from these results. Firstly, it would seem that physical activity can neutralize
smoking and obesity's effects on HDL-C, LDL/HDL-ratio and the TC/HDLratio.
Secondly, the results suggest that physical activity could lower the CHD
risk of respondents with an elevated TC, independent of smoking or obesity.
