Die gebruikswaarde van die "Structured Objective" Rorschachtoets (SORT) by die keuring van onderwyskandidate
Abstract
The characteristics of and criteria for effective education, as well as the factors
contributing toward it, are examined by means of a literature study. The teacher's
role in effective education is emphasized, and the qualities required of an effective teacher are discussed in accordance with the criteria for effective education as outlined by the TED's evaluation system for merrit awards (TED 193). The screening and selection process is illustrated from the literature and a historical survey of the screening of candidates for teacher training is presented. The methods for and documentation of such a screening and selection process are discussed and critically evaluated. The SORT is evaluated for its ability to differentiate between the personality traits of: • the junior and senior primary teacher; • teachers in the primary and secondary schools; • teachers teaching the various major courses in the secondary school; • male and female teachers; and • efficient and less efficient teachers. The results of these comparisons are qualitatively analyzed and used to determine
the value of the SORT in screening candidates for teacher training. Certain
findings are put forward and specific recommendations made for implementation
by the teaching profession and for use as a basis in future research.
