The study examines some of the strategies undertaken by the SeJiLwng District Municipality as mechanisms for reducing crime and lighting poverty. An exposition of poverty, crime and crime prevention is provided in the study. The LED and IDP projects that Sedibeng has in place to fight poverty and therefore reducing crime in the area are also provided in this study. Some of the social programmes that are in place are: health; environmental health; education; safety and security; social security grants; sports, recreation arts, culture and heritage; housing; water; sanitation; electricity; and transport. Here are some of the findings that were made: firstly, poverty and crime affect everyone as they are a social issue; secondly, poverty is seen as an excuse for people to commit crime; and thirdly, there is no clear understanding about social crime prevention and how people can contribute to the initiatives of poverty alleviation and crime prevention hypocrites
