Abstract

A study of the relationship between poet and poem in the poetry of the Sotho languages. The dessertation is based on the fact that there may exist a certain relationship between the producer of a work of art, the work itself and the critic of the work. This relationship is to be seen as three dimensional, consisting of three components that cannot be divorced from one another. In the first chapter the view is on a few general facts concerning the mode and existence of a literary work of art. Attention is given to the specific role of the literary critic in a contemporary community. The relationship between the three components mentioned is shown to be national, historic, psycho logic and formal. The second chapter deals with the traditional literature of the Sotho languages i.e. Northern Sesotho, Southern Sesotho and Setswana. Firstly the focus is on the poet , then on the poem and then on the critic whereas certain relationships are shown proving to be national, historic, psychologic and stylistic. The same procedure i s followed in the third chapter dealing with the modern poetry of the Sotho languages . The modern work of art proves to be motivated nationally, educationally, religiously and stylistically. The fourth and final chapter concludes with the external relation= ship between tradition and innovation as well as the internal relation ship between the poet and the poem.
