Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify those components with which: * A meaningful after school environmental education model can be designed. * An existing model can be evaluated. Due to the progressive realisation of the value and necessity of environmental education by the business and industrial world as well as private sector and formal institutions, increasing attention is being given to the development and presentation of environmental education models. The proposed model contained in this study is aimed at both the public and the private sector, but excludes the needs of formal institutions such as schools. Normally environmental specialists are used to develop an environmental education model for the education of employers and employees within an environmental conscious working environment. Generally these models are probably developed at random, owing to the non-availability of a guiding document or model. This study aims to alleviate this problem by providing such a model. While environmental specialists can readily attend to the compilation of the contents of such an environmental education model, this in itself is insufficient to give a functional utility to the model in terms of educational application. Because the design of such a model involves more than the mere composition of its contents, this study also incorporated the knowledge of general educationists with experience in curriculum design. In addition to this field of experience, the ISO 14001 specifications for environmental education were also taken into consideration, thereby including the international requirements for environmental education. Environmental conscious employees focus on the implementation of ISO 14001 specifications and 14004 guidelines to develop the environmental management systems of their business according to international standards with a view towards sustainable development and economic growth. Since the proposed model includes ISO 14001 standards, it will not only have national but also international application value. From the results of the study, it was determined that such a model should be compiled iteratively with the inclusion of the following components:

* Initiate and plan. * Determine the contents. * Disseminate. * Implement. * Evaluate. The following ISO 14001 specifications were integrated into the model: * The organization shall identify training needs. * All personnel whose work may create a significant impact upon the environment, shall receive appropriate training. * The organization shall establish and maintain procedures to make its employees and members at each relevant function and level aware of, inter alia: * The importance of conformance with the environmental policy, procedures and requirements of the environmental management system, including emergency preparedness and response requirements. * The benefits of improved personal performance. * The potential consequences of departure from specified operating procedures. The model is focused on the following groups that essentially form part of an organization: * Executive and Senior Management. * The work force as a whole. * Part time employees. * Contractors. * Visitors. * Environmental educationists (for the refreshment of their environmental knowledge and skills, to communicate environmental information).
