The aim of this study was to investigate the leadership effectiveness of high school Cravenweek rugby coaches, as evaluated by their players, and to determine their strong and weak points. The Coach Effectiveness Questionnaire of Rushall and Wiznuk (1985) was used to evaluate the 22 provincial coaches of the 1992 high school Cravenweek rugby tournament. Questionnaires were sent to all 440 players who took part in the tournament, and 269 (61 %) questionnaires were received back. The first series of statistical analysis were done to determine the average scores for each coach regarding each item and as a percentage out of 100. A second series of statistical analysis were performed to determine the t-values as well as the value of significance. Taking all the data into account, it was found that Cravenweek coaches were significantly less effective with regard to their coaching effectiveness than the norm. The same was found with regards to all 36 coaching effectiveness items. With that in mind the following strong and weak points emerged from the results.
