Abstract

It is a reality that hurt takes place within congregations. This hurt can cause negative behaviour amongst congregants. These can have a diverse effect on relationships within a congregation. It can also cause impairment in the ministry of a congregation. Restoration requires forgiveness. Few members know what forgiveness requires. They also do not realise the effect of forgiveness and forgiveness in their personal lives. Many Christians seem to be unaware of the elements and process of forgiveness. Addressing the hurt and forgiveness within a congregation is required to create healthy relationships. Hence, it is important to understand the dynamics of relationships as well as the process on how to develop relationships within a congregation. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect that forgiveness has on relationships within a congregation and how to assess this from a practical theological perspective. The research model compounded by Osmer will be used as a guideline for this research. The researcher used quantitative research to conduct interviews with various congregation members. This research includes a study within the neighbouring sciences such as psychology and theology, as well as exegesis of certain portions of scripture. The final purpose of this research is to assist congregations in addressing hurt and forgiveness. This research showed that a small number of congregations seem to provide teachings on this topics. Practical guidelines, based on the quantitative research, literature study and the findings of the exegesis, are compounded on handling hurt and forgiveness within a congregation. The dissertation is concluded with recommendations for further research. The recommendations are based on voids identified during this research.
