Abstract

A MODEL TO EVALUATE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE PURCHASING FUNCTION OF SENTRAALWES (KOOPERATIEF) BEPERK The aim of this study, which was conducted within the parameters of Business Economics, is the development of a performance appraisal model for the purchasing department of Sentraalwes (Kooperatiet) Beperk. In order to attain the objective of the study, a theoretical and empirical investigation was carried out. The theoretical investigation was based on existing literature and a planned, scientifically based theory of purchasing management; more specifically of planning, organization and control as elements of purchasing management. The theoretical study is the framework around which the empirical study can be conducted. Specific guidelines were identified in the theoretical study, along which the efficiency of purchasing management in commercial concerns can be assessed. These guidelines led to the development of a performance appraisal model and the attainment of the primary objective of the study. In the empirical study the present purchasing department of Sentraalwes was evaluated according to the above mentioned guidelines. In order to make the evaluation, the necessary information was calculated with the aid of interviews and questionnaires submitted to the management team, chief buyers, branch managers and to a number of Sentraalwes most important suppliers. The purchasing department scored 81.66 percent according to the performance appraisal model to indicate that there is sufficient efficiency within the purchasing department of Sentraalwes. With this information at hand, some recommendations could be made to improve the efficiency of the department under evaluation. The performance appraisal model can be used in future evaluations of the purchasing department of Sentraalwes and in evaluations of other commercial orientated purchasing departments.
