Abstract

The study evaluated the knowledge management framework of renewable energy in Gauteng, South Africa. The knowledge management framework should encompass various aspects, including policy and regulatory frameworks, financing and investment models, technology innovation and diffusion, capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and monitoring and evaluation systems. Regardless, despite the growing interest in renewable energy as a solution for energy security and environmental sustainability in South Africa, significant gaps remain in understanding of the knowledge management framework for the renewable energy industry. The study was conducted using a qualitative research approach where semi-structured interviews on a sample of 10 was used. The sample was reached using non-probability sampling executed using a purposive sampling technique. The elicited inferences were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings highlight a vibrant ecosystem of collaboration and innovation, emphasizing knowledge sharing platforms, conferences, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Knowledge management proves crucial in advancing renewable energy technologies, facilitating expertise transfer, reducing errors, and supporting continuous improvement. The study identifies barriers, such as access to finance and regulatory uncertainties, and facilitators, including government support and policy frameworks. Clear policy, infrastructure expansion, and supportive frameworks are vital for addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable progress in South Africa's renewable energy sector. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of integrating knowledge management into policy and regulatory frameworks, proposing evidence-based recommendations for the success of renewable energy projects, including proactive collaboration, financial stability measures, streamlined grid connections, and advanced forecasting.
