Abstract

This thesis investigates the factors influencing the cost structures of business ventures within the Republic of Bophuthatswana, with a specific focus on the Mogwase industrial area. The research evaluates the town's spatial and economic relationship to the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vaal (PWV) metropolis and analyzes the four primary factors of production: land, labour, capital, and entrepreneurial talent. The study employs a methodology consisting of a literature review, personal observations from the author's role as a project manager, and interviews with existing entrepreneurs. A core component of the thesis is a practical feasibility study of a hypothetical shoe factory in Mogwase, used to quantify the impact of production variables on profitability. The findings indicate that while Mogwase faced short-term developmental disadvantages in the early 1980s, its status as a declared decentralization point provided significant long-term potential. The study concludes that the financial incentives and concessions announced during the 1981 Good Hope Summit-including labour subsidies and rent/interest concessions-adequately compensate for the additional risks of establishing a venture in this region. Ultimately, the author emphasizes that a scientific profit plan and the strategic manipulation of production factors are essential for the long-term survival and success of enterprises in developing regions
