Abstract

The identification of current demarcation criteria and the development of ʼn specifically rural typology has adopted a slow trend in South Africa. Different government departments have each developed individual settlement typologies, which means that demarcation criteria are not consistently applied each time. This study aims to investigate demarcation criteria for rural settlements in order to identify current demarcation criteria for the classification of rural settlements in South Africa. The study uses an exploratory mixed research method that integrates qualitative and quantitative data in the research process. During the empirical investigation, multiple case study areas were used to apply the identified current, measurable demarcation criteria in order to investigate rural heterogeneity. Findings from the case study analysis were used to create and illustrate a concept typology for the demarcation of rural settlements in South Africa. The identified current demarcation criteria could possibly form the starting point for explaining a new current rural typology for South Africa.
