Supply Chain Management within the South African Army

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges and opportunities for enhancing Supply Chain Management (SCM) within the South African Army (SA Army). Efficient SCM is essential for maintaining the SA Army's operational readiness, especially under budget constraints and complex logistical demands. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from SA Army personnel involved in SCM activities across multiple units. Findings highlight key challenges, including budget limitations, procurement inefficiencies, outdated infrastructure, and a reliance on external suppliers. Comparative analysis with international military practices reveals potential areas for improvement, such as increased automation, streamlined procurement processes, and enhanced training. Recommendations emphasise adopting digital solutions, forming strategic alliances, investing in predictive maintenance, and implementing environmentally responsible disposal practices. By addressing these areas,, the SA Army can strengthen its SCM operations and better meet the demands of modern military logistics.
