| dc.description.abstract | The numerous changes in South Africa and the government's approach to affordable health care are having an effect on the job content of nurses. More people are insisting on care in private hospitals and nurses in these hospitals are thoroughly aware of demands which will be made of them in future. The job content of the nurse has expanded considerably and all these tasks do not always fall within her or his field of interest. In South Africa qualitative research has not yet been done to determine how nurses experience their job satisfaction. The aims of this research were to determine the factors influencing the job motivation of nurses in a private hospital. It was determined from the literature what job motivation involves, and the factors influencing the job motivation of nurses were analysed. An analysis of the literature showed that personal factors, group factors, family factors and word factors may influence the motivation of nurses. A qualitative research design was used to carry out an in-depth study of the job motivation of nurses. Twelve registered nurses (with a Paterson grading in the C band) were selected by way of deliberate selection. An interview based on the phenomenological paradigm was used to determine how participants experienced factors influencing their job motivation. Content analysis was used to analyse, quantify and interpret the research data. The results comprise the factors that have an influence on the job motivation of nurses. Some of these factors are of an intrinsic nature, while others are of an extrinsic nature. Factors were identified over which the organisation can exercise control, as were factors which can create a climate in which the job motivation of nurses can be enhanced. | en_US |
