Research clearly indicates that physical activity has a counteractive effect on the physiological- and psychological coronary risk factors such as hypertension and stress. Stress is also a known predecessor to burnout. Burnout on the other hand has also shown to be positively related to the development of coronary heart disease (CHO). However, uncertainty exists about the influence physical activity has on burnout and the burnoutCHO relationship. In the corporate environment, both CHO and burnout are furthermore associated with an increase in health-care-costs. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the associations between physical activity, coronary risk and burnout among South African male executives, with specific attention to the role of physical activity on the burnout-CHO relationship. The subjects of the study were 833 white South African male executives drawn from the SANGA.LA-data from companies all over South Africa. The quality of participation in physical activity was determined with Sharkey's (1984) physical activity index. The amount of burnout was determined by using the Pines Burnout inventory (1981) and coronary risk was measured by Bjiirstrom en Alexiou's, (1978:524-525) coronary risk index scale. ....en_US
