Abstract

The history of the Group and the background of Entity A are discussed in Chapter 1. South Africa was one of the first countries in the world to use electricity on a commercial basis. As elswhere, the supply of electricity began under the auspices of various municipalities. In the 1890's, mining groups sourced together to construct power stations in supplying their own needs. The Victoria Falls Power Company Limited (VFP) was registered to harness the Victoria Falls and supply electricity to industries on the Witwatersrand and in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The need for a national power system which could meet the demands of the entire country led to the Electricity Act of 1923 and the establishment of the Group. With vast deposits of coal a vailable the Group's base-load stations were mainly coal fired. It has also harnessed South Africa's meagre hydro potential. In addition, in 1984, South Africa's first nuclear power station was made operational. The Group was restructured in 1985 to meet the electricity demands of a changing South Africa. As a result of the restructuring, Entity A was formed. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the strategies in Entity A's strategic plan, to discover the weaknesses in the strategic plan and to make recommendations for improving these weaknesses ensuring future profitability of Entity A.

Chapter 2 deals with the principles and requirements of strategic planning. The strategic plan of Entity A is stated and discussed in Chapter 3 and consists of the following strategies: business betterment, harmonisation, sales growth, new business activities, electrification and local authorities control changing. The evaluation of the different strategies will be found in Chapter 4. As closure of this study, the final conclusions and recommendations are stated in Chapter 5, supported by relevant calculations based on the evaluation and interpretation of the net present value and sensitivity analysis of the two gaols electrification and local authority control changing.
