Die evaluering van professionele poste in 'n akademiese of universiteitsbiblioteek

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate a job evaluation system used in an academic or university library to evaluate professional posts. A brief historical survey of the origin and development of the university library was given and the place and role of the library in the teaching and research programmes of universities outlined. It was subsequently indicated that in practice there is a real lack of job evaluation systems specifically designed to comply with the needs of the library profession. An analysis was made of the most important approaches to job evaluation, and the results of a job evaluation project launched at a university (with the implementation of the Peromnes System) were analysed and interpreted. On the basis of the findings of this study the conclusion was reached that the Peromnes System, on the basis of its structure and its capability of making fine distinctions between the widely divergent job contents and tasks of professional library posts, does enable the job evaluator to make satisfactory evaluations of professional posts. The limitations and constraints of this study are pointed out as residing in the fact that (1) no empirical comparison was done between the different methods of job evaluation; (2) this investigation was limited to only four professional library posts from an evaluation project spanning the whole university, and (3) no empirical comparison was done between professional posts in different professions.
