The interaction between a pneumatic tyre and a yielding soil is modeled here. The tyre behaviour is represented by the inflation pressure and the tyre deflection on a rigid surface for a given inflation pressure and wheel load. The defiected geometry of the tyre is assumed to be equivalent to that of the centre line of the tyre. The solution is obtained by considering the interaction between the tyre and the soil as opposed to solutions based on either tyre behaviour or soil strength. To this end the limiting pressure that a tyre can exert on the soil - (as determined by the inflation pressure and tyre properties) is used. The soil strength parameters are represented by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and the stresses along the tyre and soil interface determined by means of plasticity theory. The system is considered to be two-dimensional proposed whereby the soil strength parameters.A method is of various classes of the binomial soil classification system can be predicted. Results of the model are presented in tabular form and take the form of drawbar pull, sinkage, torque and the maximum interface shear stress.
