Abstract
The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the
results of the treatment of a short-term prisoner's social
functioning.
The investigation initially focussed on the motives for
punishment and imprisonment and subsequently on the
services rendered to the prisoner by the prison.
Secondly the investigation focussed on the etiological
factors of the phenomenon of crime. Factors relating to
the crime and those relating to the criminal were discussed
independently.
The investigation also focussed on the problems experienced
by the prisoner. In this discussion the focus was directed
at the prison subculture and the deprivations caused by
imprisonment.
loss of his
The prisoner's reaction to, inter alia, the
freedom was discussed and, then his
self-image and his motivation for receiving treatment.
The social case-work method was utilized in the application
of the treatment programme. Self- image, self-maintenance,
dealing with conflict and problem solving were highlighted.
The programme was implemented for twelve weeks, after which
the prisoner was prepared for release. Measuring scales
were utilized throughout to evaluate the change and growth
in the prisoner. In the application of the programme the
single system design was utilized to gather empirical data.
From a literature study it becomes clear that during his
first imprisonment the short-term prisoner has a need for
social work services. The short-term prisoner experiences
imprisonment as a crisis and this influences his self-image
and consequently his ability to assert himself.
Social work treatment can enable the prisoner to improve
his self-image and to act more assertively in order to
improve his social functioning and to promote reintegration
into the community and counteract recidivism.
