Anthropogenic and anthropogenically induced emissions (such as emissions due to land use change) of various gaseous and particulate atmospheric species have substantially increased since the onset of the industrial revolution. This can be illustrated by considering the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs), e.g. methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The global average concentration of CH4 has increased by a factor of 2.5 from approximately 722 ppb in 1750 to 1803 ppb in 2011en_US
