Abstract
This dissertation deals with organization revitalization
through the stimulation of workgroup activities on Sigma
Colliery. The researcher points out that the worker on the
factory floor or at the coal face has a need to contribute
to the economical success of the company which employs him,
but that he is unaware of the procedures for achieving
this.
The researcher proceeds by referring to previous research
already done in search of the Hawthorne Effect at Western
Electric Company in 1924. Reference is made to Maslow' s
hierarchy of needs, the hygiene and motivating factors of
Herzberg, the work of Marrow concerning participative management,
Vrooms's research concerning leadership and motivation
as well as the work of Lawrence and Lorsch on organization
design. Based on this theory the following hypothesis
is made : To establish a change in organization culture
on Sigma Colliery through workgroup activities. The employees
will participate in decisions and planning directly
related to their work and work environment. This will. contribute
to rendering the organization more productive and
improve its excel.lent performance . Supervisors and team-leaders
will have to adapt their leadership styles to ensure
the successful implementation of the culture change. ...
