| dc.description.abstract | This study explores the just transition to renewable energy, addressing the socio-economic implications of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in Mpumalanga, South Africa, focusing on the coal value chain. As the region heavily relies on coal for energy, the study explores the challenges and opportunities for various stakeholders, including mineworkers, local communities, small-scale miners, suppliers, and coal-dependent regions. The research, guided by the just transition framework, analyses the short-term impacts and potential long-term consequences of this transition. Utilising a qualitative content analysis, including a literature review, case studies and an integrative content analysis. The study identifies critical themes, such as energy transition, employment sustainability and community resilience. The findings underscore the need for context-specific strategies that address the unique challenges of Mpumalanga, emphasising inclusivity, community engagement and policy alignments and looking at the implications thereof. Recommendations are provided for policymakers in the South African energy sector to navigate a just and sustainable transition while mitigating adverse effects on vulnerable groups. The study contributes to the broader discourse on global energy transitions by offering insights into the intricate socio-economic dynamics of transitioning from coal-dependent economies to renewable energy sources. | en_US |
