Abstract

The text of 2 Maccabees bas been fruitfully explored. Many aspects have been highlighted, from resurrection and temple propaganda to war and the role of the seven brothers' mother. However, one aspect that is yet to be explored is the significance of the many references to heaven. These references fulfil a certain role within the narrative plan. The uniqueness of the allusions to heaven may be explained through the uniqueness of the circumstances that are communicated in the text of 2 Maccabees. The narrative focuses on the centrality of the Temple and accordingly emphasizes the urgency of its desecration. Consequently, these references can be re-evaluated as fulfilling a fundamental spatial role within circumstances that involve a desecrated and ineffectual temple. They are a key facet in understanding the intricate elements that produce the salvation of the Jews of 2 Maccabees from their oppresssor.
