Abstract
Challenges in the gold mining industry To ensure a gold mine remains competitive and to ensure long-term survival given a low gold price, the mine must overcome the devastating effect of inflation and accept the challenges of the changing political situation in South Africa. The problem is to control costs, maintain profitability, and simultaneously bring about renewal in the industry. The only viable option is more efficient labor utilization. Flexible human resource management involves composite production teams including multi-skilling and job enrichment.
The Oryx model Oryx mine implemented a model based on flexible management methods and concepts rarely used in the industry:
Standardized conditions of service
Job enrichment
Composite production teams
A smaller, more skilled workforce
Dynamic organizational structures
Results With phase one complete, the mine reports a thirty percent increase over expected production figures.
Recommendations & Important Aspects Before implementation, consider:
Employee and union commitment to the concept.
Standardized service conditions to promote cohesion.
A single "mine language" for communication.
Effective management and training programs.
Clear upward and downward communication.
Reviewing existing labor relations procedures.
This model could significantly contribute to uplifting the struggling gold mining industry.
