There can be no doubt as to the importance and necessity of controlling as management function of the school principal. Control ensures the execution of the other management functions, namely planning, organising and leading. The principal whose controlling is based on scriptural fundamentals will stand in the light of creation, fall of man and His salvation. Consequently controlling should be subserviant to the will of God, which should not be neglected. When God first created man, He commanded them to fill the earth and subdue it; and have domonion over all the earth (Gen. 1:28). Therefore controlling is bound by the order of creation - in other words, man was given the responsibility to maintain this order of creation. The aforementioned together with the assumption that controlling is influenced by the study of creation, man and society, controlling can be defined as "that behavior exercised by authority in an orderly manner so as to assess compliance with His principles". The controlling concept is extremely extensive, embracing many facets such as principles and essentials for controlling, timing of controlling, means of controlling and how controlling must be implemented. Therefore school principals must be suitably trained in the necessary skills to ensure efficient controlling. A study of publications in the field of education as well as business reveals almost as many differing formulae as authors. In his formula the writer is of the opinion that the first three steps in controlling, namely setting standards, observation and measurement of activities, evaluation of achievements, are only of value if, in the event of deviation, they lead to the fourth step, which is corrective action. Corrective action implies that the principal, if necessary, should renew his planning, organising and leading, so that the objectives and goals of planning and controlling standards can be accomplished. The principal has undoubtedly a key role in the implementation and achievement of a suitable controlling system for each individual school. Effective controlling can aid in building the future of a nation of Gods people.en_US
