Exploring the experiences of female coaches in selected football clubs, schools, and associations in South Africa

Abstract

Background: Despite the rapid growth and professionalisation of womens football, the underrepresentation of female coaches remains a global challenge. In South Africa female coaches continue to face barriers that limit their access to resources, opportunities and leadership pathways. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore the lived experiences of female football coaches working in clubs, schools and academies across South Africa. The study further explored the barriers and challenges that the coaches face and the organisational interventions that could be adopted to decrease those barriers and challenges. Methods: A qualitative research methodology was used through an explorative descriptive qualitative design, with a cross-sectional time horizon. Semi-structured one on-one interviews were conducted with the participants. Results: Thematic analysis revealed two major themes: structural and systemic barriers and strategic priorities for growth. The findings indicated that female coaches navigate environments that are characterised by inadequate structural support, gender inequality and limited development pathways. Based on the findings, the study provides managerial implications, recommendations for organisations and further recommendations for future research.
