Abstract
THE OUTSOURCING OF THE TECHNICAL SERVICES OF
A PETROCHEMICAL ENTERPRISE
A literature survey and empirical study were combined to develop an
aid for the evaluation of both inhouse and outsourced technical
services. The study was restricted to petrochemical Sasol Companies
in Sasolburg.
The literature study was done in two parts:
- Outsourcing
Considerations for outsourcing, as well as fundamental outsourcing
principles were studied. A survey of practical aspects such as
organisational design, the outsourcing process and the choice of a
contractor were surveyed.
- Organisational effectiveness
Different approaches to organisational effectiveness were studied.
Judgement of organisational effectiveness are influenced by the
viewpoint of the stake-holder, time dimension and the method used
for measuring effectiveness.
The importance of different aspects of technical services was
determined. A model was developed which can be used as an aid
to compare different service organisations. The same service
organisation may also be evaluated at different times. Development of the model is an attempt to compile different financial and
non-financial measurements in a single figure. Glow diagrams were
developed for single glance display of results.
