Die novelles van S.A. Moroke : 'n literêre waardering

Abstract

The aim of this study has been to produce a literary appreciation of five of S.A. Moroke's novelettes, with due reference to the problems surrounding the term 'novelette' and the recognition thereof as a sub-form of prose in the Bantu languages. Upon present little has been said about the novelette as sub-form of prose in the bantu literature. In the preceding chapters an effort has been made to find clarity within the 'confusion' that exists around the term 'novelette' and the formulation of a general overall definition of the novelette has been attempted. After certain general characteristics had been ascertained by means of which the novelette may be distinguished from other sub-forms of prose, the five novelettes written by S.A. Moroke were discussed. Each of these works has been analyzed in respect of the following qualitative and quantative el elements, viz: events; characters; time; space; language and style; theme. These separate appriciations were them followed by a comparative evolution on literary-historical grounds. The conclusions drawn in the above study are the following: that the novelette, like any other sub-form of prose, possesses distinct characteristics and that these are also to be discerned in Tswana prose; that the author's background can have a marked influence on his work; that in any method of approach adopted in reviewing a literary work of art, the work itself should at all times remain prime and central; that there are certain universal norms with which all literary works of art must comply; that Moroke's works may be classified as novelettes and that " Bosa bo ganetsana le botsofe" is the best by far of the works that have been received.
