Abstract
GENERAL OBJECTIVE The genral objective of this study was to give a union perspective on productivity, guidelines to management in facilitating productivity and to provide guidelines on how to implement a productivity programme. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE - To provide management with tools to manage sound labour relations in the process of improving productivity in a union environment. - To evaluate perceptions surrounding the black employee with specific reference to training. - To explain the operational system of a productivity training programme and to provide guidelines on the implementation of such a programme. The primary data was collected by means of published articles and literature. METHODOLOGY A thorough theoretical study was made to identify the problems of productivity and
how to improve productivity by means of implementing productivity training programmes through explaining the challenges of management to establish common grounds with unions. CONCLUSION Productivity must be implemented in order to remain a challenging profitmaking entity in the current economic climate. A lot rests on the managerial style of management in implementing productivity programmes which include the professional management of the black employee. Changes in perceptions and conflict resolution forms a vital part in sound industrial relations and to facilitate this, management must be well informed and utilize well established and professional personnel practices.
