Investigating the feasibility of the development of prosthetics in South Africa

Abstract

The development of prosthetic devices is, and has always been, critical for enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with amputations. This study investigates the feasibility of developing prosthetic technology in South Africa, with special focus on market demand, economic and financial viability, and the challenges faced by users and prosthetists alike. The primary objective is to assess whether it is economically feasible to establish a prosthetics company local to South Africa that will be able to meet the needs set by the unique market. A mixed approach was employed for the study (not to be confused with mixed-methods), utilising a comprehensive literature review along with empirical data collected from both surveys and interviews with healthcare professionals and industry experts. The data highlights multiple significant challenges, including high costs, limited accessibility in rural areas, and struggling public healthcare support. The study finds that a small percentage of individuals with amputations in South Africa currently use prosthetics, primarily due to financial constraints, logistical challenges, and socio-economical influence. Economic analysis reveals that although a significant initial investment is required to establish a prosthetic development company, it holds the potential for a massive return on investment after the third operating year, assuming only a 1% market penetration. Despite high startup costs, the potential growth in market demand and estimated economic returns indicate that developing prosthetic technology in South Africa is indeed feasible. In conclusion, this study highlights the significant need for targeted strategies and policies to overcome financial and logistical barriers, thereby improving the lives of amputees in South Africa. Future research should focus on developing detailed business models and investigating operating chain efficiencies to support the sustainable growth of the prosthetic industry in South Africa.
