dc.description.abstractThe main objective of this research paper is to show the influence of death on both the oral as well as written poetry through the works of different poets. Their views on death are revealed through death that occurs at different stages of life. In order to demonstrate that these poets studied and understood their subject very well, Jacobson's theory of interpretation is used. In their work, poets who discuss death reveal only enough to let their audience draw their own conclusions. This is done with the intention of revealing the true meaning of death in poetry. The use of theories of interpretation in African languages is fairly new and therefore unfamiliar. This will simplify the task of However, it is hoped that interpretation for both interpreters and recipients of the message conveyed through these poems. In this essay, poems of death to be interpreted are taken from different anthologies by different poets. Chapter two interprets death and what it entails to give the readers a better understanding of the next chapters. A theory of interpretation used in the interpretation of poems is discussed in chapter three when the real interpretation of poems dealt with takes place in chapter four. Written poetry of different periods is looked at in chapters five to ten when a comparative study of oral and written poetry is dealt with in chapter eleven. A comprehensive summary of the whole work is then discussed in chapter twelve.en_US
