Equity in South African Higher Education after apartheid

Abstract

The apartheid regime in South Africa was a notable exception, as that regime explicitly opposed educational equality and openly discriminated against most of its citizens in all aspects of life. Equity efforts in the higher education system of post-apartheid South Africa are vastly changed. ICT education is of particular interest for realizing equity in the larger society because there is an ICT skills shortage, and therefore relative ease-of-employment in the South African ICT sector. Thus ICT tends to provide easier upward mobility channels to disadvantaged ethnic groups in South Africa.
