Abstract

Mechanization in the coal mining industry resulted, as were the case in other industries, in certain byproducts which are detrimental to the health of workers. Not the least is the detrimental effect industrial noise has on the health of workers. Deafness is the result of excessive noise exposure over a long period, and is irreversible. One of the methods used in industry to combat loss of hearing due to industrial noise, is the implementing of hearing conservation programmes. Legislation to make hearing conservation in the South African mining industry compulsory is pending, and the form legislation will take should soon be known. It was therefore decided to investigate the noise problem in the South African coal mines. The investigation comprised of three components. Firstly, measurements were taken to discover where serious levels of noise occur, and secondly, noise exposure levels of workers were determined. Finally, an attempt was made at suggesting possible solutios to the problem. Results did indeed indicate that a serious problem exist on this coal mine, and it was suggested that a hearing conservation programme be implemented. Although the obvious and most desirable solution is to quieten machinery and the environment to intensities below damaging levels, it is not always possible. However, properly worn personal protection, or accurate administrative protection, in association with audio-metric monitoring, can be effective in preventing hearing loss, and is inexpensive. Noise induced hearing loss is incurable, and therefore no other widespread disease lends itself better to preventive (medicine) care than noise induced hearing loss.
