Abstract

A modern tendency is that educational institutions world wide are starting to use, or are already using, the World Wide Web to cope with the growing demand for ongoing and adult education. Learning management systems can be used to create learning environments on the Web. A wide variety of learning management systems is available for Web supported learning. The evaluation and selection of learning management systems is complicated by a number of factors. The purpose of this study is to compile criteria for the evaluation and selection of learning management systems for Web supported learning. The study starts with a literature study regarding Web supported learning and learning management systems. In the subsequent chapters a list of criteria is compiled and used to evaluate three well-known selected learning management systems. It is concluded from this study that the compiled criteria can be used to successful evaluate learning management systems.
