The focus of this chapter, and the book in general, suggests a broader and geographically focused view of regional policy. Recognising that regional policies vary from place to place and over time, they would typically involve the pursuit of one or more of the following goals: reduction of regional disparities, whether for reasons of economic efficiency, political stability, social justice, change in growth patterns of population and economic activity in space, and improvement in resource allocation by reducing unemployment and promoting relatively rapidly growing sectors.en.ZA
