Tipping is an important source of income for a variety of occupations in the hospitality and tourism industry. One such occupation is waitressing and although much research has been done, especially in America, very little has been done in African countries. The purpose of this paper is therefore to determine the reasons why people tip or do not tip, as well as which socio-demographic and behavioural variables have the greatest influence on tipping. A survey was conducted at restaurants during the Aardklop National Festival, where 400 questionnaires were distributed. Results have shown that the reasons why people tip are financial, good service and social acceptability. Results have also revealed that more behavioural than socio-demographic variables influence the tipping decision.en_US
