Abstract
THE PROBLEM OF BRIDGING THE ROLE FROM STUDENT NURSE TO THAT OF
REGISTERED NURSE
The project was undertaken to determine to what degree the training
of the student nurse prepares her for the role she has to fulfil as
ward sister.
The aims of the project were to determine the problems a recently
qualified sister experiences in the transition phase between the two
roles and the formulation of directives for a bridging course between
these.
The professional socialization process of the student was analysed, as
well as the roles of registered and student nurses. The influence the
ward sister, as role model, exerts on a student nurses' professional
development was indicated.
The student nurse has a great need for continual support. She wants
to look up to the ward sister, as role model, and learn from her. The
unwitting influence of the ward sister on the student nurse emphasises
the great responsibility each ward sister has toward her subordinates.
A descriptive survey, where two questionnaires were used for data collection revealed the difference between theory and practice. Both
respondent groups viz. the recently qualified sisters and the matrons,
confirmed that the recently qualified sister experiences problems in
her new role in the adjustment phase b~cause her training did not
prepare her for the role of ward sister.
Shortcomings exist in the measure of support the recently qualified
sister receives from supervisors. The majority of both respondent
groups agreed that one or other course is essential to support the recently qualified sister. All facets of the ward sister's role except
patient care appear to pose a problem. Recommendations have been made
to overcome the problem regarding the aims, content and duration of a
possible course to "ease" the transition phase for the recently
qualified sister and therefore prevent reality shock, high personnel
turnover and a negative influence on the profession as a whole.
