Abstract

Based on the report of the Department of Health, the best estimate of people living with HIV in South Africa is 30.2%. What is clear from this study is that there is an exceptionally severe epidemic of HIV/AIDS in South Africa and that this epidemic affects all parts of the population. Although the percentage of employees that are HIV positive is unclear, the highest levels of infection and the largest number of HIV positive individuals are currently in sub-Saharan Africa. A key concern for companies is that AIDS, because of its sexual transmission, affects those of working age.
