| dc.description.abstract | Definition of the problem and purpose of the study The specific problem addressed in this study, is the lack of an efficient performance measurement system at the Information Management division of Iscor Flat Products. The main purpose of the study is to determine the characteristics of efficient performance measurement systems on the basis of a study of the relevant literature, whereafter the deficiencies in the current performance measurement system will be determined. Based on this findings, recommendations will be made on the development and implementation of a new performance measurement system for the division. Literature study It is clear from the literature that effective performance measurement will entail certain advantages for all parties involved. These parties include the organisation, management and employees. Improved involvement by employees, better communication, better handling of pro bl ems and the ultimate realisation of the overall goals of the company, are some of the advantages that were identified. There are, however, a number of requirements that must be met in order to achieve the above-mentioned advantages. Proper training, complete documentation, realistic goals and the involvement of all parties are essential to achieve efficient performance measurement. Empirical study The research has shown that there is a significant difference between the current system and how the respondents viewed a new system. This was true for 100% of the statements included in the questionaire. Recommendations The system should support the strategy of this organisation. It should also be part of a performance management program. Fair and consistent performance measurement should be ensured. Training of management and employees is vital. The implementation of a new system should be accepted by all parties. Conclusion When the performance of employees are constantly improved by usmg an efficient performance measurement system, the overall goals of the company should ultimately be met. | |
