Abstract
The study investigates the effects of staff turnover on performance in the Department
of Public Works, Roads and Transport, in the North West Province. Staff turnover
can hamper the running of the organization. The data collection method used is the
survey method, where a questionnaire was distributed to respondents. The outcome
of the study, based on data analysis and interpretation, shows that turnover impacts
negatively on the performance of both the organisation and employees. It was also
discovered that promotion to the next level on the career ladder, low salaries as
compared to private sector, and a lack of staff development are some of the reasons
why employees leave the department. Recommendations are presented, so that
staff turnover can be minimised and managed in future.
