Abstract

Technikons have developed into fully-fledged tertiary institutions and receive recognition from the State and research institutions for their role in research. Technikons chiefly provide practice-oriented development research, that is, research essential for trade and commerce. According to the objectives and nature of the research carried out at technikons, a need has arisen for recent information aimed at problem-solving. Facilities must be available in order for the research to be carried out efficiently. In the light of these needs, technikon libraries must offer the researchers services and information witch will make a positive contribution to the success of their research. This places great demands on technikon libraries, and these services can only be provided if there is comprehensive stock, efficient purchasing and processing methods, modern technology, well-trained and dedicated personnel and the physical facilities for housing the service. Technikon libraries must determine the nature and substance of technikonbased research in order to be able to achieve this objective. Libraries have at their disposal facilities such as computerized library systems, optical disks, access to databases, information networks, commercial information services, electronic interpersonal communication, inter-library loans, selective dissemination of information, and so on. Technikon libraries can use these facilities for efficient information recovery and services according to the needs of the researchers at those technikons. It is essential for the library to be involved in research carried out at technikons in order to be able to make a significant contribution to the success of this research.
