Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by means of a survey, the training of mechanical engineers in Sastech. This study was prompted by a suspicion/presumption that the mechanical engineers are not trained properly m Sastech. The method of study comprises a literature study of factors connected to the training of engineers, followed by an empirical survey. The reason for the empirical study was to determine the viewpoint and expectations of engineers, with regards to training of mechanical engineers at Sastech. Sastech is a subsidiary of SASOL responsible for the management of SASOL technology. Training of mechanical engineers in a petrochemical industry like SASOL is important for sustainable development. There are numerous strategic benefits for a company to train their mechanical engineers with regard to industry specific needs. The existence of a motivational climate in the organisation is a prerequisite for the successful training of mechanical engineers. Involvement of all parties in training is necessary to make it a success. Young engineers starting their careers are usually confident and willing to work but if management does not provide a motivational climate for these engineers to work in and to develop, valuable human resources are often wasted. The focus of the dissertation is the critical success factors in training and the existence of a motivational climate to train engineers. In creating a motivating climate strong inputs are required from management, leaders and senior engineers to formulate objectives for training and development. These factors are the input for the transformation process where effort lead to performance. The success of potential development of engineers in SASOL requires inputs and communication from all role players to achieve set standards and objectives. The presence of critical success factors of training, and the existence of a motivational climate are tested in the dissertation by means of a questionnaire. The research was done within the Engineering Support group in Sastech Secunda. The results of the research are reported and recommendations are made for the establishment of a motivational climate to enhance the effectiveness of training of mechanical engineers in Sastech.
