Abstract
This thesis focuses on the theory and practice of language editing in Afrikaans. However, this is only an introductory study and in no way an in depth study. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which the language/text-editor has to have knowledge of grammar, and how he applies this knowledge in editing a text. This grammatical knowledge is based on standardisation, command of language and text linguistics, which constitutes the theory of language/text editing.
In the first two chapters the aim of this thesis is determined, research questions are identified and the research methodology is discussed. The third chapter deals with language editing from the angle of standardisation for the editor. Other sub-disciplines under discussion are: phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicography, pragmatics and stylistics.
Chapter four deals with language editing with command of language as framework. In particular, it is the differences and similarities between command of language, traditional language editing and present-day language editing.
