The aim of this investigation is to investigate the role that the social worker plays in improving the father-child relationship after divorce. In order to achieve this aim, specific objectives were set. These objectives are as follows : To determine the role of the parents in the functioning of their child/ children after divorce; to determine the role of the father in improving the relationship between him and his child after divorce; as well as to determine the role of the social worker in improving and maintaining the relationship between the father and his child/ children after the divorce. Following from the research outcomes, the aim was to formulate guidelines for social workers to improve and maintain the relationship between the father and his child/ children after divorce. In order to attain these objectives, a literature study was undertaken; firstly to ascertain if any previous research had been done on the role of the social worker in the fatherchild relationship after divorce and what that role might be. Guidelines for group work and casework with fathers as well as_ group work and casework with children were formulated and discussed. These guidelines can assist social workers in therapy, while dealing with such cases. Descriptive, exploratory and explanatory research was used in the research project. Questionnaires were completed by social workers working at Family Oriented nongovernmental-organisations in the Northwest and Gauteng provinces. One hundred (100) questionnaires were sent out. Only fifty (50) social workers responded. From the study it is evident that social workers have a role to play in improving and maintaining the father-child relationship after divorce.
