Abstract

Extensive areas of vegetation are disturbed, damaged or destroyed during the construction of freeways in Southern Africa. Due to the heterogeneous climate soiI and topographical conditions in Southern Africa, disturbance occurs in a variety of vegetation communities. In the course of this study the possibiIity of using a number of indigenous species to rehabiIitate damaged and denuded areas has been investigated. Suitable grass species which occur naturally in the climatic zones con= cerned, as welI as species which occur in other climatic zones, were in= vestigated. The results of this investigation have contributed to the fact that various indigenous grass species are included in seed mixtures used tor purposes of re-estabIishment.
