Abstract
Extensive areas of vegetation are disturbed, damaged or destroyed during
the construction of freeways in Southern Africa. Due to the heterogeneous
climate soiI and topographical conditions in Southern Africa, disturbance
occurs in a variety of vegetation communities.
In the course of this study the possibiIity of using a number of indigenous
species to rehabiIitate damaged and denuded areas has been investigated.
Suitable grass species which occur naturally in the climatic zones con=
cerned, as welI as species which occur in other climatic zones, were in=
vestigated. The results of this investigation have contributed to the
fact that various indigenous grass species are included in seed mixtures
used tor purposes of re-estabIishment. It has been shown without any
doubt that seedmixtures should be compiled according to the area where they
will be used and thus adapted to the local conditions. ...
