Abstract

The purpose of this research is to assess the challenges of managing public assets in the Local Government and Traditional Affairs of the Mafikeng district and the impact that these challenges have on the delivery of service.This research aims at highlighting the challenges faced by the Local Government and Traditional Affairs of Mafikeng with regards the efficient and effective management of public assets. The study also aims at highlighting the effect of the current management of public assets on the level of delivery of services to the local community. The literature was reviewed using asset management matrix. Most words found on the articles on asset management were relevant to Local Government and Traditional Affairs of Mafikeng. The questionnaires were developed and distributed to employees of The Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs and the Mafikeng Local Municipality. That was done without looking at their age, gender, nationality, job position or their years of employment.The findings were that there are challenges on managing public assets within the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs. There is a challenge in mis-use of infrastructure assets in the department. It also found that the integration of asset management with other systems in the department will assist the department to reach its goal. The current management program should be adhered to, as it can help to achieve the set strategic goals of the department.The results of this study can be used by management of Local Government and Traditional Affairs to improve the process of public assets management within the Mafikeng district. The research can be used as a model to deal with public assets and finance management in future.
