Abstract
EXPECTATIONS REGARDING AFFIRMATIVE
ACTION IN A STEEL PROCESSING PLANT
The interest shown in the concept of affirmative action has
grown extensively over the last few years in South Africa and
has placed it on the agenda of a number of organisations.
Employers and employees might however interpret affirmative
action differently. It is the opinion of the researcher that
employers are distressed about affirmative action because they
do not know what the employees expect from affirmative action
programmes.
This study focusses on the expectations of employees in regard
to affirmative action. Questionnaires were used to determine
the employees ' expectations regarding promotions, training and
development, facilities, the organisation's responsibility
towards the community and some other factors in an affirmative
action programme.
The results of the questionnaires showed that the majority of
the black respondents had positive expectations regarding
promotions, training and development, facilities and the
organisations ' responsibility towards the community.
White men had negative expectations regarding promotions, but
expected that training and development plans instituted from
affirmative action programmes should also benefit them.
41.18% of white men saw affirmative action as reversed
discrimination. They had a positive attitude towards the
elimination of discriminatory practices involving facilities.
