Abstract

At present wheat is considered the most important cereal in the world economy. The increased demand for wheat was met by increased locaI production in the more stable producing areas and by the importation of wheat from overseas. Thus the South-Western Cape with its reliable winter rainfall become the most stable and for many years the largest wheat-producing area. New techniques in the field of wheat production and the release of better adapted cultivars, led to the successful large-scale production of wheat in the Ea.s tern Orange Free State. Wheat produced in South Africa consists almost exclusively of bread wheats which are used for the manufacturing of bread and related products. The breeding of new wheat cultivars which are adapted to local conditions have a high resistance to existing plant diseases and give a good yield of high quality, which is of great importance to any wheat producing country.
