Abstract

There is a high incidence of sexual abuse of adolescents in South Africa. Despite this, only a small number of sexual abuse cases are reported immediately. The main purpose of this research was to investigate the reasons why adolescents fail to report sexual abuse, to establish reporting guidelines, and to determine the role of the forensic social worker in this regard. The research followed a quantitative approach. Two hundred and twenty adolescents from two high schools were involved. The findings showed that there were no definite guidelines available for the report of sexual abuse, and that forensic social workers have a definite role to play.
