Abstract

Persons in senior professions with a lot of responsibilities have a high incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Little is known about the effect of mental stress on the cardiovascular system. With this research is found a reliable experimental method to get a total view on the events in the cardiovascular system during mental stress in the daily work routine. The subjects in this investigation were anxious young men, calm young men and calm thirty year old men. Changes in the heart frequence, contractility of the heart and peripheral resistance during mental stress were successfully measured with the electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram, ballistocardiogram and pletysmogram. Al parameters showed noticeable changes during mental stress. No clear differences were found in the results between the different groups (most Iikely due to the small groups). The cardiovascular reactions of the calm young men corresponded in the different experiments, while great variations were found in the other two groups. The variations in the results of the individual subjects showed that psychological processes effect the cardiovascular system . The binaire choice generator was experimentally found the best method to arise mental stress. With the digital calculator developed, could reliable hemodynamic changes be measured. The method used in this study can be used heIpfuIIy for future clinical work.
